“Honey, wake up.”

An elbow was nudged into my back. “Huh?” Elena had interrupted a very erotic dream in which two mermaids were about to defin themselves and spread wide before their god—me. Damn. I opened my eyes, stretched, and yawned widely. “What time is it?”

Elena was sitting up on her side of the bed, pulling at the skin of her big toe. She glanced at me. “After noon.”

“Really? Wow, we really slept in today.” The sky outside was still dark. “Rain?”

“Yes. According to CNN, they’re expecting rain for most of today and tomorrow.”

Well, that screwed up my sunset bonfire, reciting love poems, then sexing her down on the beach. I stretched again. “What do you want to do today?”

Elena looked up from scrutinizing her big toe and said, “We have an appointment at three.”

I squinted at her. “Appointment? With whom?”

Elena gave me a lopsided smile. “You’ll see.” Then she resumed the whole big toe perusal.

She was definitely acting…different. I could see fine lines around the corners and a hint of darkness beneath her eyes. Jet lag? I tilted her face to look at me. “You feeling okay?”

Elena pulled out of my grasp. “I’m fine. Really. I am.” She gave me a better, more normal smile, but I remained skeptical. I slipped an arm around her hips, laid my head in her lap. Her thigh muscles were tight, tense as I lay there. Something definitely wasn’t right.

“What’s up, babe? You don’t look right.”

She let out a deep sigh. “It’s nothing. Probably my hormones.”

I’d known Elena a long time, and never before had she used hormones as an excuse for any of her actions. “PMS?”

She made a face and shook her head. “No.”

I suddenly grinned, rubbed my cheek into her belly. “Pregnant?” We’d been hinting at the whole baby thing but never gotten serious. Maybe it had caught up with us?

“Not that I know about.”

Okay. It was time to give up and accept that this was one of those “things about girls men just don’t get” moments. I shifted back to the original topic. “So, we’ve got an appointment at three.”

“Yes, we do, so why don’t we get dressed, grab some lunch, and get to where we are going. Time’s a-wasting.”

“What the wifey wants…”

“…this wifey surely gets.”

“Right.”

Lunch was a lazy affair. There was no crowd in the dining room, so the service seemed exceptionally good. After lunch, we pulled up the collars on our borrowed slicks and jumped into a cab. Elena gave the cabbie the address. His eyes bucked and he glanced back and forth between us before finally turning around and putting the car in gear, a half-smile on his lips.

“What was that about?” I asked in her ear.

Elena feigned innocence. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean. The cab driver’s reaction to the address.”

She shrugged her shoulders. “I have no idea.” My eyes bored into the back of her head as she stared out the window.

“I’ll just bet you don’t but I’ll go with your flow.”

She smiled and pecked my lips.
